S47 UN 1989 Flags of the World : Democratic Kampuchea in FDC

Issued in 1989 as part of the UN Postal Administration’s Flags of the World series, this 25-cent First Day Cover ( FDC ) depicts the flag of Democratic Kampuchea ( of the Khmer Rouge ), a yellow three-towered temple against a red field. Throughout the 1980s, the United Nations somehow officially recognized the exiled coalition over the Phnom Penh-based People’s Republic of Kampuchea ( PRK ), enshrining a stark Cold War diplomatic reality into philatelic history as a silent witness to Cambodia’s contested political landscape.
