Anchored by the extraordinary flow reversal between the Mekong River and Tonlé Sap Lake, Cambodia’s vast freshwater ecosystem sustains one of the world’s most productive inland fisheries, hosting over 500 native species. To honour this vital natural lifeline, the nation issued its first-ever ” Fish of Cambodia ” postage stamp series on January 29th, 1970. Featuring three cherished local species — Trei Khla, Trei Domrei, and Trei Rors — this historic philatelic set stands as a witness to an aquatic heritage which shapes national identity and yields an annual harvest of at least half a million metric tonnes, providing such essential source of protein for the Khmer population.
